The Collegiate Table Tennis Competition Results:
The University of Utah won the 2011 National Collegiate Table Tennis Rocky Mountain Division Championship. The first table tennis tournament of the new Rocky Mountain Division of the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association was held February 19, 2011 at the Salt Lake table tennis club; tabletenniseventcenter.com . The teams, and the order of finish were, University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University, and Westminster College. There was also a team from the Salt Lake table tennis club, which was generous to allow us to use 4 table for the day at their beautiful new facility at 3572 South 1950 West in West Valley. The Rocky Mountain Division is the newest edition to the NCTTA, which currently has 150 Colleges competing in 19 geographic divisions throughout North America.
The U of Utah and BYU have a storied competitive sports history and it looks like table tennis is going to be added to that tradition. The matches were all close and hard fought, but fairly played. The edge went to the experienced U of Utah team who has been playing in the NCTTA Northern California division for the past two years. The U of U team was delighted to only have a 15 minute ride home after the matches instead of the 15 hour drive across the western deserts and mountains which they endured for the past two years because of their love for the game and desire to compete. The Utah team includes: Bruce Majors, Jilin Guo, Rhushikesh Kulkarui, Greg Mudrow, and Chao Gao.
The National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA) is an organization dedicated to promoting competitive table tennis at the collegiate level. NCTTA also provides assistance and leadership in implementing College/University Table Tennis programs, securing the opportunity for student-athletes to compete in the sport of Table Tennis in schools and achieve athletic and academic excellence. NCTTA stands to meet the challenge of promoting one of the least developed collegiate sports by actively increasing its membership, competitive level of play, and professionalism. NCTTA works to promote both recreational and intercollegiate Table Tennis on college campuses. Our ultimate goal is to promote serious amateur sport competition among collegiate table tennis athletes and schools most specifically in the area of women’s table tennis where the NCAA has currently created an impetus for such a program.NCTTA affiliated schools offer their players an opportunity to be on a team, represent their school, and compete in a sport they enjoy. By actively seeking to increase our membership, competitive level of play, and professionalism as an intercollegiate table tennis organization, NCTTA continues to work toward establishing table tennis as a recognized sport among collegians.
