Table Tennis Tournament Rules and Procedures

The Granger High School Ping Pong Club would like to invite all students in grades 9-12 and ages 13-18 throughout the state of Utah to the GHS State Invitational Table Tennis Tournament.
1) Participants must be a fully registered high school student in an approved Public, Private, or Charter School in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 in the state of Utah.
2) Participants must between 13 and 18 years of age.
3) Participants agree to the tournament rules and the tournament procedures below.
4) The event will be held at the:
Table Tennis Training and Event Center
3572 S 1950 W, West Valley City, UT 84119
5) The event will run from 1 pm till 7 pm (M.S.T.) on January 28, 2017.
a) Beginner Division 1-4 pm. Advanced Division 4-7 pm
6) A participant can only apply to one division.
7) Application must be received by January 26, 2017.
8) Application and check/money order of $10 per application must be addressed to Granger High School and sent to:

9) On site applications can be done between 12:30-1:00 PM on January 28, 2017.
Cost will be $15 per applicant.

Official Tournament Procedures

The tournament will be run as follows:
There will be 3- rounds of 2-Divisions:
Professional Paddle (Advanced Division), and Non-Professional Paddle (Beginner Division)
Each division will be run as follows:
1) 1st round. Participants will be placed randomly in round robin groups by level of applicant. If an applicant fails to mark their level. They will be assumed to be of the highest level.
2) 2nd round. Participants will be marked in groups A and B and a 2nd round robin will commence.
a) Group A will be determined by the top player(s) in each round robin of the 1st round.
b) Group B will be determined by the lowest player(s) in each round robin of the 1st round.
3) 3rd round. Winners of round robins in the 2nd round will go into an elimination bracket. Placement will be random for class B.
a) In group A, team members from the same school will be randomly placed in non-competing brackets if possible.
i) This policy is put in place, that should 2 or more participants make it to the group A final elimination bracket, they will be given the best chance to meet in the latest round possible.
b) A winner of a group is determined by the number of matches one.
i)If there is a tie. The winner will be determined by individual games one.
ii) If there is still a tie. The winner will be determined by head to head results between
the tied players.
4) There will be 4 awards per A, B, sub-divisions.
a) Champion, Runner Up, and Semi Finalist (2) for Advanced Division Class A
b) Champion, Runner Up, and Semi Finalist (2) for Advanced Division Class B
c) Champion, Runner Up, and Semi Finalist (2) for Beginner Division Class A
d) Champion, Runner Up, and Semi Finalist (2) for Beginner Division Class B
5) There will be team trophies.
a) 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.
b) Team trophies are strictly determined by results in the Advanced Division Class A.
i) If a participant loses in the 1st round of the A division, his/her school receives 1 point.
ii) If participant loses in the 2nd round of the A division, his/her school receives 2 points.
ii) Every round thereafter is doubled in point values until the finals.
c) The high school with the highest points is awarded the 1st place team trophy to an agreed to representative of that high school.
d) The high school with the second highest points is awarded the 2nd place team trophy to an agreed to representative of that high school.
e) The high school with the highest points is awarded the 3rd place team trophy to an agreed to representative of that high school.
f) In the case of ties, participants of the same school will choose one participant of that school to vs another participant from another school in a 1 game to 11, winner take all game for the team award.
g) If there is only one participant of that school, that participant will receive the school award.
6) If over 75 players participate in this event, tournament organizer reserves the right to eliminate 2nd round robin format, and place participants randomly into one of 4 elimination brackets as described in rule 4). Team scoring will remain the same as described in rule 5).

Official Tournament Match Rules

1. All players will toss the ball up at least 6 inches, showing the opposing player the toss, before hitting the ball.
2. The serve must touch the serving players side and the opposing players side before the opposing player can hit the ball.
3. If a receiving player hits the ball without letting the ball first hit their side of the table, they lose the point.
4. If a player moves the table while a point is in play, the player loses the point.
5. If a ball hits the net, on the serve, and goes over, it is declared a net and a reserve is done.
6. If the ball hits a corner or edge of a table, it is still “in play” if all other rules are observed.
7. Each player gets 2 serves, then must allow the opposing player to get 2 serves, before getting the serve back.
8. Players roll the ball under the table to determine who gets choice of serve or side first. If the first player chooses to serve first, the second player can choose to take the other side. If the first player chooses side, the second player can choose to make the first player serve first.
9. All judge’s rulings are final.
10. Smacking a paddle on the table will lose you a point.
11. Hitting the table twice during the tournament, throwing your paddle, insulting your opponent, or just general disrespect to competitors, judges, and viewers, will result in a loss of tournament participation.
12. There are no refunds.
13 All matches are best out of 3 to 11 points, except the final match in each division.
14. The finals in each division are a best of 5 to 11 points.
15. In the final game of a match, players must switch sides once a player obtains 5 points.
16. If the game has both players at 10 to 10 points. Serves alternate till a player wins by 2.
17. All paddles must have USATT approved rubber on both sides or paddles bought from Walmart, Big 5-Sporting Goods, Dick Sporting Goods or other national retailers are accepted.
18. All paddles must have red rubber on one side and black rubber on the other.
